18 months old – That’s a year and a half!

President’s Day was a holiday from work for Mommy. So to take advantage of the time off, Trey had an appointment with the Pediatrician for his 18-month well-baby check-up (a little early, but close enough). Again, Trey received flying colors from his doctor. He is perfectly healthy! Trey is still in the 85% for height but has dropped to the 40% for weight. The doctor helped me understand how normal this is. Trey is extremely active and growing like a weed. His weight isn’t a concern, unless he stops gaining or begins to lose weight. As long as he is still gaining weight then there is nothing to worry about. With regard to his height, she even asked how tall Wade and I are…wondering if he’ll be a tall adult. I explained to her that our immediate family isn’t tall, but there are few in the family tree that were taller than average (over six feet). She said that by the age of two, a child’s adult height can be predicted within a margin of a few inches! So in six months from now we will have a glimpse into his future :o)

Most of her interest in Trey was again his cognitive and social development. She was extremely impressed with him, and the job that Wade and I are doing with him, along with the obvious attention he is getting at school. Trey knows several words in baby sign language, and demonstrated them for the doctor. What really surprised her was how articulately he spoke the words as he signed them for her. He showed her the signs for happy, eat, please and thank-you. Trey didn’t have any shots this time, but still put up a fight when it came time to look in his ears and mouth. But he was a big helper when the doctor listened to his chest. He held the stethoscope against his tummy :o)

At home Trey continues to enjoy eating like a big kid at the table in his booster seat. With his growing interest in going potty, we bought Trey his own little potty. It’s still a bit soon for him, but he really enjoys the ‘mechanics’ of going potty. He sits on his little potty (fully dressed with diaper on), then he gets up and tears off a piece of toilet paper, puts it in his potty, closes the lid and then flushes the big potty! It’s a riot! But it’s encouraging to see him so interested and involved in the process already!

Some other verbal/cognitive developments, Wade and I are no longer Momma and Dadda, we are now Mommy and Daddy. I love that…it warms my heart to hear his little voice calling for me from the other room, “Mommy!” During our long car rides to and from school/work there are many stop lights on the way. Trey has started saying, “GO!” when the light turns green! When you ask him what red means, he does the baby sign for STOP! He also says school bus and airplane when he sees them. In my last update I told you Trey’s favorite song is Twinkle-Twinkle. It’s probably still his favorite, but he’s added, “Ring around the rosy” (he loves to sing Ashes, ashes) and “Rock-a-bye Baby.” After story time each night he says, “Baby, baby..” that’s my cue to sing Rock-a-bye Baby” :o) I'll wrap this up with one more tidbit, every time Trey sees the camera now he says, "CHEESE!" as you'll see when you visit the latest set of albums :o)

I'll post an update again in a few months, but we won't have another well-baby visit till Trey is TWO YEARS OLD!

Just had to tell ya!

Hi, Family and Friends-
It’s been a while since I’ve posted an update. Although I’ll be posting again when Trey is 18 months old (first week of March) with his well-baby stats, I figured you might like to hear about what he’s been doing lately, and the developmental leaps he’s made.

At the first of the year we stored away Trey’s highchair and transitioned him to a booster seat. He let us know he was ready by refusing to sit in his highchair and demanding to sit in the kitchen chairs like Mommy and Daddy. He now sits at the table with us, no tray in front of him, using his own utensils and taking responsibility for his own drinking cup.

Trey also has a step stool that he uses to climb up to the sink and wash his hands before meals. He LOVES his step stool (and the accessibility to water) very much!

He is very much on the cusp of speaking in full sentences. His vocabulary grows exponentially every week! At the moment he is conversing with us, speaking very articulately about what he wants and what he thinks…however it’s in his own language :o) It’s so much fun to watch him work with language. No sounds are repeated, he uses multi-syllable sounds and his tone and inflection mimic adult language. He knows what he is saying and gets frustrated because we can’t understand him. The minimal amount of baby sign language he knows is no longer adequate to communicate all that he is trying to say. It won’t be long now!

Trey loves to sing. At the moment “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is his favorite, complete with hand gestures and choreography! Since we have such an extensive commute to and from school each day, we have a lot of time to sing along with the radio or CD. From the back seat I hear him singing his own version of what is playing. It just tickles me to see him enjoying himself.

I’m sure there are many things I’ve neglected to mention here, it’s just a flood of change for us right now. In the next few months Trey will be transitioning to the big toddler class, with kids ranging in age from 18-36 months! Trey will be exposed to potty training!! Already Trey knows where the ‘potty’ is and what it means to go ‘pee-pee’. I suspect that when he sees his new classmates in line for the bathroom that he’ll have an interest in starting training!

As tall as Trey is, and as quickly as he is growing, I fear the crib will be the next thing to go. It’s a convertible, so we’ll change it to a toddler bed…that should prove interesting :o)

Trey is 15 months old!

Trey is growing up too fast! He had his 15-month well-baby check up this week. He’s perfect! Healthy as a horse (not even a sniffle – knock wood!) He’s still in the 50th percentile for weight and 85th for height. Not sure where the height is coming from…we certainly aren’t tall people :o) He’s still eating like a little piggy. The doctor was very impressed to hear that he still eats every two to three hours (except during the bedtime sleep marathons – 10-13 hours!), and his main meals are huge! He is eating whole sandwiches by himself! Check out the photo gallery to see him holding and eating a peanut butter sandwich!

Trey’s teachers describe him as the busiest kid in class! He prefers to run, not walk, and will scale anything in reach! He’s quite the agile climber. He’s in perpetual motion (could explain the appetite :o) and very interested in everything! Instead of depending on others to entertain him, he prefers independent play. He’ll choose an activity in class; pull it off the shelf and ‘work’ all on his own. At this age most children play in packs, constantly fighting for attention or over the same toy. Not Trey, he’s completely content to blaze his own trail. When it comes to teacher-lead, organized group activities he is very attentive. He loves to sit with the class to hear a story or learn about shapes and colors.

Trey is a very happy, congenial child. At school, they refer to him as ‘the greeter’. Anytime someone enters the classroom, he shouts, “HI-eeee!” He makes friends wherever he goes…not at all afraid to meet new people. We’ll have to start introducing the idea of “stranger danger” very soon!

His vocabulary is exploding! At this age it’s typical for a child to have mastered 3 to 6 words. Trey is closer to a dozen…not including the animal noises he can mimic and the baby sign language he’s learned at school :o) What’s more impressive (in our humble opinions of course :o) is his ability to understand language. He’s very cognizant of what we are saying to him, even if he can’t repeat each word back to us. When we ask him if he needs a diaper, he runs to his room waiting to be changed. If we ask him to go get his shoes so we can go outside, he runs to get his shoes. If we ask him to bring the red ball (as opposed to yellow or purple), he picks the red ball and brings it to us!

What I want to know is…when did all this happen??? We’ve been right here the whole time, and I swear I don’t know when he went from being a sweet little toddler, to being a whole big person with his own thoughts and desires!

Katrina's little sister - RITA!

Let me start by saying we are safe and sound, back home in Spring, Texas. Everything is in tact, and life has returned to normal. Now the retelling of the adventure!

Early last week we were all glued to the television watching Rita strengthen and make her way toward the Texas gulf coast. The storm impressed and frightened the community as she strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane in the matter of a day! All the computer models were predicting a direct strike on Matagorda Bay, Texas just southwest of Galveston Island. If that held true, Galveston, Houston and surrounding areas would be on the ‘dirty side’ of the storm, bearing the brunt of the ‘right hand punch’. Meaning the predicted 15-20 foot storm surge, the most severe winds and the lingering massive amounts of rain would fall on us!

After the nation witnessed the devastation Katrina waylaid on New Orleans and Biloxi just three weeks prior, we weren’t taking any chances with our lives or most precious possessions. Tuesday night, the media started communicating local and state government plans for mandatory evacuation plans for the most exposed areas and voluntary evacuation plans for other areas of potential risk.

By Wednesday night we were packing up and preparing our home for the worst. Thankfully Wade reserved hotel rooms for us and his mom quickly enough that we were able to find vacancy. Not everyone was as lucky. After loading all photo albums, jewelry and other precious irreplaceable items into the car, and securing the house for the pounding wind we started on our eight hour road trip north in the middle of the night. Knowing that we’d be in the company of 800k-1.2 million of our neighbors (after all was said and done, the numbers were closer to 3million!), Wade mapped a route that kept us off the over burdened interstate, and kept us on the free flowing back roads to the Dallas area. Only a few times were we delayed on the interstate trying to get to our next connection. Trey did just fine in the car, the cats however weren’t as happy!

We made it to our destination, McKinney, Texas (northeast of Dallas), just before 8am Thursday morning. We were able to check-in early, and get the kitties to their final destination, a local veterinarian’s office for kenneling. Immediately afterward we showered, ate and slept! Our accommodations were very nice. The room we were in was a free upgrade. We were surprised to find a full sized Jacuzzi hot tub in the room! Visit the Photo Gallery to see Wade and Trey enjoying a bubble-swim in the hot tub. Trey and Wade also enjoyed the indoor pool…mommy was sleeping or showering during these times and didn’t get any pictures.

McKinney, Texas is a short ten minute drive to Anna, Texas where my brother Aaron (Trey’s Uncle Bub) and his brand new bride (Auntie Lenda) live! The sad irony is Aaron is a First Lieutenant in the Texas Army National Guard, currently deployed to the disaster zones. He’s been in New Orleans, LA for three weeks, only to come off orders and then back on again deployed to the affected areas in Southeast, Texas! We didn’t get to see him at all while we were in town. He’s working hard to make our communities safe and livable again, and we couldn’t be more proud of him!

My dad, mom, sister and family dog, Tootsie arrived Friday afternoon at Aaron and Lenda’s house. They stayed with her for the duration of the storm, with Tootsie comfortably lounging on her back patio.

We were in the Dallas area for five days and four nights. We did our best to make the most of a very scary situation. Rita made landfall early Saturday morning on the Texas/Louisiana border. We were thankful that our homes and communities were spared the brunt of Rita’s most severe impact; however we are still very concerned about our neighbors to the East. Please pray that our friends in Baytown and Orange, Texas are safe, healthy and their property in tact.

Over the next several days as we waited for Rita to pass, and for the throngs of humanity to trickle back home, we entertained Trey with visits to Auntie Lenda’s house to play with our family, and get out and about in Dallas. Please visit the Photo Gallery to see all the fun!

After taking another long-way-around route, we finally made it home Monday evening, finding our home barely touched. Only a few small branches and some leaf-litter were in the yard. We didn’t even get enough rain to properly water the plants! Wade had to put the soaker hoses on them when we got home! Our neighbors informed us electricity was lost for only a few hours, nothing spoiled in the fridge. All in all, it was as if a Texas thunderstorm blew through…fierce and fast! Then it was over.

Texas has learned a lot from this experience, as have we. Would we do it the same way if given the chance to do it again? YES! We can’t predict the weather with 100% accuracy. Mother Nature has her own agenda. One that can’t be understood till it’s over. A little money and a little time spent…all worth it when you consider what could have been the ultimate cost!

Trey is 1-year old!

Wade and I are so proud of our little man. This past year has been such a blessing! We couldn’t have asked for a better, sweeter or more amazing baby! Now that we are parents of a toddler, we are expecting all the same and more from Trey. He’s already started showing signs of a temper :o) Wonder where he gets that from?? We’ve seen a fit or two already, and have no doubt there is plenty more where that came from!

He’s brilliant and ambitious, together that equals impatient and fearless! Wade and I can’t let our guard down for a second!

We’d like to extend a huge heartfelt thank you to those of you who could attend Trey's party. What a BLAST! We hope you all had as much fun as we did :o)

We spent the week after the party at the beach, and had an amazing time! This is our first week back at home, work and school. This weekend I hope to have new albums posted of the birthday bash and of our week at the beach. Of course I’ll send an email letting you know when to check back :o) Also, thank you notes should be in the mail the end of this week or next.

In the meantime, today was Trey’s 12-month well-baby checkup! Mommy and Daddy got a gold star from Trey’s doctor :o) She said that we are doing a great job with him and to keep it up! He’s consistently hitting big milestones ahead of time, and she expects that to continue. He’s strong and always busy. The look of intense concentration on his face when he is ‘working’ is a sign of aptitude…aptitude for what is yet to be seen

Trey is 32 inches tall, landing him in the 90 percentile. He is almost 24 pounds, putting him in the 50 percentile. He is a very active baby! Since he started crawling at 4 ½ months and walking at 9 months, he’s not chunky like most babies his age. I explained to the pediatrician that he eats like a horse so I can’t understand why he isn’t heavier. She said to be thankful he has such an appetite. It’s very common for babies between the ages of 12 months and 2 years to have a decreased appetite. She said often times parents question how their children are able to survive on such small amounts of food. She surmised that Trey’s activity level is what keeps his appetite so big, but not to be concerned if that changes in the coming months.

We hope this update finds you all well. Our friends and neighbors in NO, LA are in our thoughts and prayers as they continue to struggle through the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. We were staying on Crystal Beach when the storm hit, but you’d have never known a hurricane was in the gulf. We were lucky to have had gorgeous weather the entire week. I couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty as we relaxed and enjoyed ourselves at the beach.
